A Chicago Sinfonietta tradition continued Sunday afternoon at Wentz Concert Hall on the campus of North Central College in Naperville as the group and many other special guests honored the life and work of American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Metropolitan Opera clarinetist and South Side Chicago native Anthony McGill performed at the event, as did noted bass/baritone Eric Owens and the Mosaic Choir from Waubonsie Valley High School.

The well-attended event Sunday was the kickoff of a variety of events at North Central to honor King this week. A special prayer breakfast was held Monday morning, and later on Monday author and actor Hill Harper gave a keynote address as part of the college’s King celebration.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, poet and actor Carlos Andres Gomez will be fetured during the annual MLK Week Poetry Slam at the Union, 129 W. Benton Ave. on campus. At 7 p.m. on Saturday, the college will hold a Gospel Extravaganza at Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave., to round out the week.
