An ex-convict who took three cans of beer last winter from a convenience store in Lisle has been sentenced to eight years and six months in prison, for burglarizing the store and assaulting its disabled owner.

Authorities said Tyris L. Robinson feigned being armed with a handgun during the Feb. 4 incident at the 7-Eleven store at 1100 Ogden Ave. He beat the store’s owner before fleeing.

Robinson, 29, was sentenced to prison in 2007 after being convicted of armed robbery, and was paroled in early 2011. He remained Wednesday in DuPage County Jail in Wheaton, awaiting transfer into the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Records on file in DuPage County Circuit Court indicated Robinson pleaded guilty Nov. 2 to felony charges of burglary and aggravated battery in a public place in connection with the 7-Eleven crime. Six companion charges that included robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery and retail theft were dismissed in exchange for that plea, according to records.

Judge Daniel P. Guerin sentenced Robinson to prison. Guerin recently gave Robinson 338 days of credit toward his sentence for time he spent in jail following his arrest, records showed.

Robinson entered the store about 12:41 a.m., his face partially obscured by a hoodie. He hid one hand inside his pocket and pointed a finger at the owner as if holding a gun, authorities said.

The owner, who uses a cane in walking, fought with Robinson, at one point trying to shove him out the door. After failing to get any money, Robinson grabbed three cans of beer from a cooler and fled.

Police arrested him about 10:45 p.m. Feb. 15 in his home on the 4500 block of Dumoulin Avenue in Lisle. They found him hiding under a couch.

Robinson also was arrested and charged with misdemeanor retail theft in a Feb. 13 incident at Weldon Hardware, 4715 Main St. in Lisle. Police said he shoplifted a $30 conduit bender.

Court records indicated that case was dismissed in exchange for his plea in the 7-Eleven crime.
