High school counselor faces more sex abuse counts

Updated: September 24, 2012 6:25AM

A Naperville North High School guidance counselor accused last month of molesting a female student has new legal trouble following the return of a DuPage County grand jury indictment.

John W. Carbonaro was originally charged with two felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim between the ages of 13 and 17 when he surrendered Feb. 23 to authorities. A grand jury late Thursday indicted him on six additional felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, making eight altogether, according to records on file in DuPage County Circuit Court in Wheaton.

Carbonaro’s court file indicated the alleged abuse occurred between July and October. It reputedly involved Carbonaro and his victim touching parts of one another’s bodies, court records stated.

A 33-year-old father of two from Warrenville, Carbonaro has worked for Naperville School District 203 since 2006. In addition to being a counselor, he is the junior varsity girls golf coach, and also worked part-time for the Naperville Park District.

District 203 officials in mid-February learned from an unidentified parent about the reputed relationship between Carbonaro and a 16-year-old student. School administrators contacted the girl’s parents.

An investigation by officials of the DuPage County Children’s Center ensued, culminating in Carbonaro’s arrest. The alleged abuse occurred in his home.

District 203 officials have suspended Carbonaro from work with pay and relieved him of all of his school-related duties.

Carbonaro is free on a $20,000 bond, or 10 percent of his $200,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday in court. He could be sentenced to as much as seven years in prison if convicted.
