A couple and their two children - one of them an infant - escaped injury late Tuesday night after their newly-purchased van jumped over a curb and struck the front windows of a business in central Naperville.
Damage to the FedEx/Kinko’s office at 860 W. 75th St. was minor following the crash. Two metal window frames were bent and two panes of glass were left cracked after being hit by the dark-colored, 2011 Toyota van.
Naperville police Sgt. Steven Woodham said at the scene the crash occurred about 10:51 p.m., after the male driver “failed to ensure the vehicle was fully in park before he exited the vehicle.”
Woodham said the woman was in the front passenger seat and reached over to put the van in park as it lurched forward. The van went over a narrow sidewalk and banged into the windows, but did not breach the building.
The man and woman were wearing their seat belts and the children were in safety seats at the time. No one inside the building was hurt.
Woodham said the couple had recently purchased the van and might have had some “unfamiliarity” with its operations.
No tickets were issued, as the crash occurred on private property, Woodham said. The van was not seriously damaged, and the family drove home in it.
Four police cars and a Naperville Fire Department truck were sent to the scene.
The FedEx/Kinko’s office is in a strip mall on the south side of 75th Street east of Plainfield-Naperville Road.
