Ice cream social set in Naperville
NCO Youth & Family Services invites the public to an ice cream social from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the NCO offices at 1305 W. Oswego Road.
A commemorative photo will be taken at 5:30 p.m. to celebrate NCO’s 40th anniversary.

Used books sought for upcoming sale
Residents can donate used books, CDs and DVDs at Naperville Area AAUW collection drives from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Naperville School District 203 administration building, 203 W. Hillside Road, and from 9 a.m. to noon June 11 at Neuqua Valley High School, 2360 95th St.
Donations are also being accepted between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. through June 10 at the Crouse Education Center, 780 Shoreline Drive, Aurora.
Materials collected will be used at the AAUW’s annual used book sale to take place from June 15 to 18 at Neuqua Valley High School. More than 30,000 used books, CDs, DVDs and more will be available at low prices.
A preview will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. June 15, with a $10 entry fee. The sale itself will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 16 and 17. A close-out event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon June 18, where those attending will pay $7 for everything they can fit in a grocery bag.

Triathlon to be held at Centennial Beach
The SheROX triathlon will take place at 7 a.m. June 12 at Centennial Beach, 500 W. Jackson Ave.

Naperville Library to sell equipment
The Naperville Public Library will hold its biannual Library Sale from 9 a.m. to noon June 18 in Meeting Room A/B at the 95th Street Library, 3015 Cedar Glade Drive.

Walking tour to focus on Naper history, unique food
During the History Bites Walking Tour, travel through downtown Naperville for unique bites of history from 4:30 to 6 p.m. June 25.

Orchestra to present concert with Latin flair
The DuPage Symphony Orchestra will present “Latin American Fiesta” at 7:30 p.m. June 25 at the Community Concert Center in Central Park, 104 E. Benton Ave.

Civil War tour planned in Naperville
“Walking with Soldiers: The Civil War Tour” will be held from 2 to 3:15 p.m. June 26 beginning at Naper Settlement Visitor Center, 523 S. Webster St.
Partcipants can learn the story of how Levi Shafer’s gun fired the first two shots at Gettysburg, see how the shell that killed Dr. Horace Potter is incorporated into his headstone, view the grave of a Confederate soldier that is buried at the Naperville Cemetery and hear more stories of Civil War veterans who were from Naperville.
The event is for teens and adults. Some of the historical material may be too graphic for younger audiences, organizers said.

Golf outings to aid WDSRA
The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association Women’s Golf Outing is set for 9 a.m. June 27 at Arrowhead Golf Course, 26W151 Butterfield Road in Wheaton.
The event will feature a continental breakfast, nine holes of golf with a cart, buffet lunch and special on-course treats. This year’s theme is “Grease.”
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a caddy auction at 8:15 a.m. and shotgun start at 9 a.m. Tickets are $75 per golfer; after June 10, the price increases to $85.
Funds raised will help support WDSRA programs.

Will County Farmers Market to open Thursday
The Forest Preserve District of Will County is hosting a farmers market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays from June 2 to Sept. 29 at Riverview Farmstead along Book Road between 111th and 119th streets.
The market will feature fresh items such as chicken, eggs, jams, tomatoes, bread, salsas, sauces and more. In addition, from 10 to 11 a.m. this Thursday, the district will offer “Fresh from the Farm,” a program designed for children and families.

Families sought for
exchange students
Share America International is seeking host families in Naperville for summer exchange students from France.
The high school age students speak English, are fully insured, have their own spending money and attend two field trips per week.

Registration under way for Safety Town program
Registration has begun for the Safety Town Summer Program sponsored by the Naperville Junior Woman’s Club in conjunction with several city of Naperville departments and other community groups.

The Safety Town Summer Program is targeted for children entering kindergarten or first grade. Children attend a 90-minute class once a day for one week and learn about bike safety, fire safety, proper use of helmets, car seat use, water safety, bus safety, pedestrian safety, electrical safety, train safety, poison awareness, animal safety, personal safety and calling 911.

Camp Naper looking for participants
Camp Naper weekly summer day camps begin June 20 at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St.
Participants can choose from one of four camps: “Secret Seekers,” “Treasure Hunters” and “T.H.E. Detectives: Treasure Hunters Extreme” for grades one to six and a Civil War encampment for grades six to eight.
During each session, campers will look for hidden treasures both on Naper Settlement grounds and around the community.
Middle school Civil War enthusiasts will enjoy camping overnight in the fort during the Civil War Encampment, where parents can also join in the fun, organizers said.

Soap Box Derby to be run Saturday
Boys and girls 8 to 17 years old will compete for the title of Chicago Soap Box Derby Champion from approximately 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Diehl and Frontenac roads.
Spectators are welcome and children can stop by for a test run in a soap box derby car.

Cavalcade of Planes at Clow Airport
The 12th annual Cavalcade of Planes will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Clow Bolingbrook International Airport, located along Clow International Parkway, Bolingbrook.
The event includes airplanes on display, Parachute Club jumps, food, entertainment and more.

Take a guided tour of Joseph Naper’s original 19 blocks of Naperville with an emphasis on downtown Naperville living and the German immigrant experience from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The USO of Illinois will host the first USO Heartland Golf Classic, titled “Tee-Off for the Troops,” starting at 7:30 a.m. Monday at Bolingbrook Golf Club, 2001 Rodeo Drive, Bolingbrook.
The golf outing will raise funds for USO of Illinois programs and services that support more than 300,000 troops and their families throughout Illinois. Fundraiser to aid local veterans
Naperville Responds to Our Veterans will host the “Day Out For Our Veterans” fundraiser throughout the day June 8 at several restaurants and businesses in Naperville.
Proceeds from revenue generated on that day will be donated to Naperville Responds to Our Veterans, an all-volunteer organization whose mission is to assist veterans in need by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and coordinating the process of repairing, building and donating homes.

Senior picnic planned along Riverwalk
Naperville and Lisle Township Triad invites the public to attend a senior picnic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8 at the Naperville Riverwalk Grand Pavilion.

Historic wedding dresses to be on display
Naper Settlement’s museum curators will present seldom-seen wedding dresses from the museum’s collection, dating from the early 19th century through the 1950s, during “A Walk Down the Aisle,” being held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. June 11 at Naper Settlement’s Collections Care and Storage Facility, 180 Fort Hill Drive.
Attendees will have an opportunity to consult about care and storage issues for their own wedding gown and other textiles.
The program includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum Collections Care and Storage Facility. Attendees are asked to enter through Door C at the building’s far northwest corner.

Loaves & Fishes to present ‘Day Without Hunger’

Summer Reading Program set to begin
