Library holding
card design contest
The Naperville Public Library is hosting a contest for children in first through fifth grades to help design the new Naperville Public Library children’s library card.
To enter the contest, visit one of the three library buildings, either Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.; Naper Boulevard Library, 2035 S. Naper Blvd.; or the 95th Street Library, 3015 Cedar Glade Drive, or visit www.naperville-lib.info and download an application.
All entries must be hard copies submitted to any circulation desk at one of the three library facilities. No online entries will be accepted. Every child may submit one entry and will receive one coupon for two free slices of pizza at Jump!Zone.

Photo contest in Naperville
Naperville for Clean Energy and Conservation is hosting a photo contest for families to show how they are helping preserve the environment.
Through Aug. 1, families can enter the contest by submitting a photo of their eco-friendly activities. The contest allows up to three entries per household, one in each of the three categories: inside the home, outside the home and away from home.
A judging panel will evaluate the entries and winners will be announced over Labor Day weekend.

Fishing derby set for Saturday
The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) will host a fishing derby from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 16 at Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm, 425 Trout Farm Road, Bolingbrook.
Forty fishing slots are available. Participants will be paired with a fishing buddy for the event.
Prizes will be awarded. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and fishing pole. Additional festivities include carnival games, face painting, snacks and more.

Curious items subject
of Naperville program
Some of the more curious and unusual items in the Naperville Settlement museum’s collections will be in the spotlight from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Naper Settlement Collections Care and Storage Facility, 180 Fort Hill Drive.
Participants can learn about the questions curators ask when examining historical artifacts to gain insight about the people from the past who owned and used them. Attendees are welcome to bring their own curious artifact to share with the group.
The program includes a tour of the Museum Collections Care and Storage Facility.

Photo exhibit to end July 21
In her photo exhibit “Buying Beauty,” photographer Morgan M. Ford explores the use of women’s beauty rituals ingrained in American culture and the influence of advertising in the use of cosmetics.
The free exhibit runs through July 21 in North Central College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St.

Jazz Camp and concerts
set for North Central
The 23rd annual Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp and “Hot Jazz-6 Cool Nites” concert series will be presented at North Central College July 16 to 22.
The overlapping events are jointly sponsored by the college’s Jazz Studies program. The Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp is a comprehensive week-long program designed to foster a jazz vocalist’s artistic concept, musical knowledge and performance skills. The “Hot Jazz-6 Cool Nites” evening concert series will feature the camp faculty artists and is open to the general public.

Tasty history program
in Naperville
Travel through downtown Naperville for unique bites of history from 4:30 to 6 p.m. July 23.
Participants will enjoy a progressive food experience with tastings at local restaurants, liberally seasoned with local stories and architecture highlights.

Memories of Cock Robin
to come to life
Hear the story of Prince Castle/Cock Robin during the program “Daddy of the Drive-Ins” set for 3 to 4:30 p.m. July 24 at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St.
The program will begin with a showing of “One in a Million: The Prince Castle and Cock Robin Story,” produced by Naperville Community Television Channel 17.
After the program, Walter “Ted” Fredenhagen Jr., son of Walter Fredenhagen who founded Prince Castle with his lifelong friend Earl Prince, will answer questions.

Special Needs Nights
at Centennial Beach
Families with individuals who have special needs are invited to enjoy a quiet, relaxing evening at Centennial Beach, 500 W. Jackson Ave., from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on July 17 and 31.
The shallow end and slide will be open. No registration is required and the cost is $3 per person. Season memberships can be applied toward the entry.
