Heartland Blood Centers lists blood drives in area

The severe winter weather is impacting more than just the roads. Heartland Blood Centers is reporting that the blood supply also has been negatively impacted.

According to Dennis Mestrich, Heartland Blood Centers CEO, the organization is down about 2,000 units of blood from the usual in January because of the severe temperatures and an increase in illness-related cancellations. Included in this number was the cancellation of some 21 mobile blood drives.

To meet the needs of the 49 hospitals served by Heartland Blood Centers, almost 600 units of blood are needed every day. Those prospective donors who had to cancel are encouraged to reschedule their appointments. Call 1-800-786-4483 or visit www.heartlandbc.org to find a blood drive close by.

To be a blood donor, individuals must be at least 17 years old or 16 with written parental permission; weigh at least 110 pounds; be symptom free of cold, flu and allergies; and be in general good health. Call 1-800-7TOGIVE to learn more.

Make appointments for most blood drives at www.heartlandbc.org. Walk-ins usually are welcome, too. Photo identification is required.
