In remembrance of Sept. 11, Heartland Blood Centers asks community members to donate blood this month.
“Donating blood is a respectful way to honor those who perished on 9/11, and at the same time help an infant, child, or adult needing a life-saving blood transfusion in their community,” said Dennis Mestrich, president and CEO of Heartland Blood Centers. “Heartland was one of the blood centers that shipped blood products to New York that fateful day 12 years ago.”
Heartland Blood Centers works with over 2,000 organizations to sponsor blood drives throughout the community. Any company, place of worship, community organization or individual may host a blood drive. To set one up, call 1-800-7TOGIVE or visit www.heartlandbc.org and go to “holding a blood drive” for more details.
To be a blood donor, individuals must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with written parental permission; weigh at least 110 pounds; be symptom free of cold, flu and allergies; and be in general good health. Donors who have traveled outside the United States within the past 12 months should contact Heartland at 1-800-7TO-GIVE to determine eligibility.
