Musical Expressions, 190 E. 5th Ave., Naperville, is celebrating 25 years — all at the same location.
“We are probably the best kept secret,” chuckles Sue Good, studio director and owner of Musical Expressions, which offers private music lessons to young and old.
The studio has mostly relied on word-of-mouth for their successful two-decade run. It first opened in January 1989.
Good, a pianist with a music performance degree, found herself enthralled by her friend Kevin Reid’s idea of opening a music school, worked there from the start and subsequently purchased the business six years ago.
“Naperville seemed ideal. It wasn’t as huge but had potential,” explains Good of their choice of The Boeker Building on 5th Ave. “The double-wall thickness are perfect sound proofing. The walls are stone.”
Musical Expressions has since expanded to some upper levels, and offers ample parking at the west side of the building.
“We now have 11 studios, two large and one small waiting room, and three offices,” Good says.
Unlike many of the other teaching facilities in the area, Musical Expressions does not offer instruments for rental or retail.
“All we do is teach,” Good says. “We teach all levels, all ages and all styles.”
Music students from 4-year-olds to their oldest student at 67 years old are taught by teachers who go through a rigorous interviewing process.
“They are all degreed teachers — highly qualified, and most of them are performing artists,” Good says.
Private lessons, usually a half-hour long, run weekly at a fixed time with a monthly auto-pay system that runs throughout the year.
“We tried to make it easy for the parents. And we only close for major holidays like Labor Day and Christmas. We are open throughout the summer though,” Good explains.
Musical Expressions is also big on offering music ensembles a venue to explore their music.
Orthodontist moves practice downtown
When Dr. Dwight Frey purchased an orthodontic clinic at 114 N. Washington St. from Dr. Kenneth Peterson almost six years ago, a move seemed inevitable. Early this September Frey Orthodontics moved to their new location above Egg Harbor Cafe at 175 W. Jackson Ave., Naperville.
Dr. Frey brings with him degrees from the University of Michigan and Northwestern as well as two general practice residencies.
The orthodontics practice offers state-of-the art equipment and even a teeth scanner.
“It takes accurate impressions without the mess and hassle,” explains Frey’s fiancé, Shannon Courtemanche, who also handles much of the marketing and logistics of the move.
“We wanted to deliver patient care and customer service in a comfortable location and the facility matching the doctor’s expertise,” Courtemanche says.
Frey also has been called to help further innovate the Invisalign product, and introduces many of the newer methods and technologies into his practice.
New day-care facility coming by 2014
Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center, an education-based children’s day-care, preschool and kindergarten provider, is looking to open its first three Illinois locations within the next year, one of which in Naperville.
Franchise owner Steve Waltenberg will open the first location on the northwest side of Chicago, with Naperville and Hinsdale to follow. The day care will provide full-time and part-time care for infants 6 weeks to 12 years old, and also offer shuttle services, says Stephen Dixon, vice president of franchise development at Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center.
“It is a very stable economy and population with a high number of educational institutions; median income and demographics are what we look for,” adds Dixon of some of the particulars they look for. “Lots of strong high schools, public and private.”
Dixon also says that about 45 percent of households have school-aged children in DuPage County, which convinced the company to look into opening in the area, but they are still looking for a suitable location. DCSF says there are about 24 licensed day care facilities just in Naperville.
