A few weeks ago, Naperville resident Don Thorne opened the first Pillar to Post in Naperville. The home inspection company has more than 400 franchise locations in the U.S. and Canada, with many more planned.
“My cousin opened a (Pillar to Post) franchise in 2004 in Indianapolis and kept telling me about it,” says Thorne, owner and inspector of the Pillar To Post franchise in Naperville. “His franchise made it through good times and survived the bad times successfully. That’s got to say something about the business. I thought I’d give it a shot, finally.”
Pillar To Post was crowned the No. 1 home inspection company in North America in 2012 by Entrepreneur Magazine’s annual franchise rating, and topped the GI Jobs Magazine franchise ranking for veterans, according to its website.
“I have a good eye and like dealing with people. I like educating, especially new home owners,” Thorne says.
After an extensive 60-hour training course, Thorne is licensed by Pillar To Post and certified by the state of Illinois to be a home inspector.
“I like to be very thorough and take my time,” says the Errors & Omissions Insured inspector.
He earned his certification by Pillar To Post in May.
“The laws are different in each state, and I think only Texas has tougher laws than Illinois,” Thorne says.
Thorne has spent his career as an architectural coating specialist, working with brands such as Glidden and Behr, but was looking to open his own business in the greater Chicago area, and remembered his cousin Matt Lottes’ advice about Pillar To Post.
“They make it almost easy to run a one-man-show,” Thorne says. “I can focus on my clients because they have a business model inclusive of marketing and fliers.”
Jenny Taylor Boudoir Photography, which opened in Naperville less than two years ago, has branched out to include Jenny Taylor Hair & Makeup.
“We offer a certain look,” explains Taylor, owner and entrepreneur of the latest venture.
The new business offers hair and makeup services for events, especially weddings.
“We had so many of our boudoir customers come back and request that special look for their wedding,” Taylor explains how the idea started.
It’s all about “that pretty hot look,” Taylor adds. “Who doesn’t want to look hot on their wedding day?”
Her girls go through vigorous training and are all hand picked by Taylor, each fully trained in both hair and makeup. Packages are available and independent of photography services. But former boudoir photography clients will receive discounts.
Safety office opens
National Railroad Safety Services opened its first Illinois office at 1601 Bond St., Naperville, in July.
This office provides experienced personnel to perform railroad flagging duties, and also equipment, cell phones, railroad radios, personal protective equipment, derailers, flags, whistles, air horns and fuses. Established in 1999, NRSS has other offices in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dallas, Texas.
“We are always looking to have offices in strategic locations that meet our needs and allow us to serve more clients; this new space with DynaCom (property management company) provides us with just that,” said Debby Shepherd, president of NRSS. “We had a lot of expectations and the space on Bond Street has exceeded every one.”
