Jennie Krezel and Kendra Otto plan to up the ante for pet salons. On Nov. 18, the award-winning groomers opened UpScale Tail, fusing high-end pet care with an in-depth understanding of each breed they serve.
Both dogs and cats are welcome at UpScale Tail, 1419 Plainfield-Naperville Road.
“We really take the time to ask our customers what they need,” explains Otto, who has 17 years show and judging experience.
She even will tackle the most challenging grooming breeds, such as the Scottish terrier and Portuguese waterdog.
“Some clients will give us the job and say ‘do what you want,’ and we almost always get an ‘oh my goodness’ response,” Otto says.
“We believe in education,” adds Krezel, a stylist with eight years experience and numerous awards under her belt. She says they “always (are) aware of continuously changing fundamentals.”
Both Otto and Krezel are long-time colleagues and quickly became friends while working at the same Illinois grooming shop.
UpScale Tail’s list of services for dogs and cats reads like any menu for upscale human hair salons. From simple haircuts to the intricate art of hand stripping, Otto and Krezel do it all, and they have the awards to show for it.
When the two pet stylists decided to venture on their own, they say Naperville was at the top of their list.
“We were looking for something far enough out of respect for our previous employers,” says Otto, a Naperville resident.
“And Naperville is such a pet-friendly community,” Krezel adds.
The pair found the location on Naperville-Plainfield Road that used to house Canine Clippers, and remodeled the unit that stood empty for two years. Teals, purples and whites bring a contemporary look while still perpetuating a pet-friendly feel.
UpScale Tail also works with abused dogs and rescue centers, as well as recently partnering with Two Bostons pet boutique.
Marriott’s new patio
The Chicago Marriott Naperville says business is so good that it is opening an outdoor patio to accommodate guests’ special events. The Naper Patio is 1,000 square feet of outdoor space that connects with the Marriott’s meeting rooms and ballroom for a versatile event setting.
“We’ve been open just over a year, and we built the Naper Patio to accommodate the overwhelmingly positive community response to our hotel,” said Dan Gustafson, general manager of the Chicago Marriott Naperville. “Now events from weddings to corporate meetings can add an outdoor element.”
A press release earlier this month describes the space as a contemporary tree-lined plaza of modern, landscaped outdoor space that “can transform any event into an elegant indoor-outdoor event.”
Karma Medspa & Wellness Center recently opened at 710 E. Ogden Ave., suite 200, in Naperville, offering a range of wellness services.
“Our medspa is unique because we bring together a variety of specialists under one roof,” says Dr. Sajjad Murtaza, one of the founding partners of Karma.
“Our staff, and facility as a whole, strives to help patients rehabilitate to feel their best, while our fitness instructors, clinical licensed aestheticians and physicians help them look their best.”
“For years, Dr. Murtaza and I envisioned a medical spa featuring a model of integrated care. A diverse, friendly community like Naperville is the perfect setting,” says Dr. Mathai Karingada, a licensed internist certified in aesthetic medicine and a business partner.
“Now we can help our clients take the next step towards looking and feeling their best, and they don’t have to leave Karma to take that next step.”
Other staff include a chiropractor, a rehab specialist assisting in pain management and injury recovery, an obstetrician/gynecologist who specializes in cosmetic gynecological and women’s health, and a laser skin treatment specialist, among others.
