One organization’s loss is another’s gain. Communications guru Heather Wachter has resigned her post at Bridge Communities to devote herself full time to Community Christian Church in Naperville.
“This job is the perfect convergence of my professional experience with my personal beliefs,” said Wachter, who was the communications and donor relations manager at Bridge Communities in Glen Ellyn. “I am a strong believer in Community Christian Church’s mission of helping people find their way back to God.”
She will be the communications director at the church.
“To be able to apply my skills and expertise to such a life-changing mission means the world to me,” she said. “Community does so much good for so many people. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to join the team.”
Wachter began attending Community with her family in 2009.
“When we started here, we were experiencing an extremely difficult season of life, and getting involved in Community literally saved us,” she said.
About two years ago, Wachter started to help with public relations as a volunteer at the church.
“I approached our Campus Pastor Shawn Williams when I realized that many stories of the good things happening in and through Community are not shared outside of the church,” she said. “I asked if I could help spread the word, and he happily accepted.”
Wachter helped to promote stories about Naperville Yellow Box campus, as well as churchwide stories about all 12 Community campuses.
“I’ve always had a heart for volunteering, and I was honored to be able to put my professional skills to use to help my church, which means so much to me,” she said.
Doug Leddon, business/operations director at Community, said the official position of communication director was created largely because of the church’s growth.
“We identified the need for a communications director to join our team to streamline and strategize our communications functions, which continue to grow as we add more ministries and more campuses” Leddon said. “We consulted with other churches our size and hired a communications consultant to help us identify our needs and help us identify the right person for the job.”
And he said they were lucky to find that person in their very own congregation.
“We were very excited to identify Heather as our candidate and even more excited when she accepted the position,” he said.
As the communications director, Wachter will have responsibility for all of the church’s external and internal communications, including the website, emails, collateral and press releases.
“We’re looking forward to how she can help Community do a better job communicating our mission internally and externally,” Leddon said. “Heather’s got the winning combination of passion for our mission and an outstanding background in communications. We’re glad to welcome her aboard.”
Wachter said leaving Bridge Communities was a tough decision.
“I wouldn’t have left Bridge for any other reason,” she said. “I love Bridge’s mission of helping homeless families cross the bridge to self-sufficiency and loved being a part of the team that made that vision a reality for so many families.”
But she says the calling from the church was one she had to answer.
“Nothing is closer to my heart than helping people find their way back to God,” Wachter said. “I’m grateful that Bridge Communities and Community Christian Church are forging a strong relationship; two outstanding organizations impacting their communities one person, one family at a time.”
