The Naperville Police Department will partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration in collecting expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. Bring medications to the front circle of the department’s headquarters, 1350 Aurora Ave., no questions asked.
The National Take-Back Initiative is the fourth in which Naperville police have participated. According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, twice as many Americans regularly abused prescription drugs than the number of those who regularly used cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin and inhalants combined. That same study revealed more than 70 percent of people abusing prescription pain relievers got them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet.
Since the first national drug take-back event in September 2010, 1,409 tons of medications have been collected and removed from circulation.
