The City hosted a Strategic Plan Open House October 8 at the Municipal Center where staff discussed the three strategic plan goals identified by the City Council in July as well as preliminary objectives identified by staff to support these goals. The presentation from the October 8 open house is available at www.naperville.il.us/strategicplan.aspx.
An update to the City's strategic plan began earlier this year as a result of changing demographics, economic characteristics and the addition of five square miles of land through annexations over the last 15 years. The priorities in the new strategic plan will assist in allocating or reallocating limited resources over the next five years and allow the City to focus on specific community goals.
At a special workshop held on July 30, Council identified three strategic plan goals. These goals were identified as areas the City was "falling behind" based on comparisons to similar communities, private sector models and resident expectations:
- Be recognized as an E-government innovator.
- Improve traffic flow and congestion.
- Set the standard for community education and involvement.
The goals were selected by City Council from a list of nine alternatives that included topics such as community health, public safety and diversity awareness. Although only three goals were selected, the remaining topics will continue to be areas of focus by City departments. The goals are based on the results of the 2012 Naperville Citizen Satisfaction Survey and an assessment of City strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats by City Council. By identifying a limited number of goals, the City believes it can be far more effective in achieving success in each area.
