Editor’s note: The Sun, with the help of the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club, is featuring each month a recent Naperville transplant or a resident who has had a significant life change. Let’s get to know our neighbors
Ernestine Garries, 61, first wanted to live in Skokie, but then she found Naperville. She said our city reminds her of Newtown, Conn., and South Hampton, N.Y., other places she has lived.
What brought you to Naperville?
“Originally I was looking to live in Skokie, but I could not find the right location for me at the time. I spoke to a relative who said Naperville is the kind of place for you! Upon arriving I took a drive out to Naperville and loved what I saw.”
How did you hear about the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club?
“I met a lady at Talbots while shopping in Naperville, who loved the cowgirl boots I was wearing and wanted to know where I bought them. We started talking, and I explained that I was new to the area. Her name is Marta Hudson, and she told me of a social club that she is a member of, and suggested that I attend one of the meetings. Marta said that I would really like working with the women on the various committees. We exchanged numbers and she gave me date and time of the next NNNC board meeting and welcome coffee, which I attended and joined!”
Why did you join the NNNC?
“The NNNC is a wonderful social club. I joined because the ladies remind me of the ones I knew at the YWCA in Connecticut. I’m now on the board and will help with charities and fundraising.”
What is your favorite thing to do in Naperville?
“My favorite thing to do in Naperville is volunteer my time in nursing homes and rehab centers where I use my experience as a pastor. When I see the smiling faces there, it adds so much joy to my life. I also love to shop, site see, dine and meet good people!”
The Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club holds a welcome coffee once a month from September through June at the Municipal Center. Contact Sue at 630-904-5629 to learn more.
