“A College is Born” is the first of the five-part documentary series, “A Promising Start,” which commemorates the sesquicentennial of North Central College. Produced in partnership between North Central College and Naperville Community Television, the series will feature all 150 years.

The production is being led by NCTV17’s Emmy award-winning Executive Director Liz Spencer, who is also a senior lecturer of broadcast communication at the college. A “College is Born” premiered on the campus Wednesday and will air on NCTV17.

The series is in chronological order with “A College is Born” featuring the first 50 years. Viewers will learn how American education first developed and the role that religion played in those early days. Through historical photographs, interviews, re-enactments and video, the documentary brings the first years of North Central College to life.

“A College is Born” explains how the college came to be, its earliest location and relocation to Naperville. The documentary features the North Central presidents, as well as influential students and faculty of that time period. Additionally, viewers will get to follow along through various funding efforts that would ultimately provide a solid foundation for the college.

College students of today will be surprised when they hear what a typical day at North Central College entailed during its first years. You’re bound to learn something by watching “A College is Born.”
