Area athletes gathered Jan. 22 at Metea Valley High School for the 2014 Upstate 8 Conference Cheerleading Championship, but this time, they were the beneficiaries of the cheering.
Fourteen high school teams tumbled, danced and cheered before a packed house at the Aurora high school. In the end, varsity cheerleaders from Neuqua Valley High School earned top honors for the second straight year, followed by South Elgin and Metea Valley respectively.
Neuqua head coach Kathy Tichelbaut said she is proud of their back-to-back conference wins, and attributes much of their success to “the strong leadership we get from our eight seniors.”
“They have been amazing leaders and role models to our underclassmen,” Tichelbaut said. “This year’s team has an amazing work ethic. They push each other through obstacles we have encountered along the way and hold each other responsible. They really work as one cohesive unit. All 22 members play an equally important role, and we wouldn’t be as successful if someone was missing from our puzzle.”
Local teams will join hundreds from around the state as they look ahead to the competitive cheerleading sectional competition Feb. 1.
