Katherine Smirnov, a fifth-grader at Fry Elementary, won first place in the National InvestWrite essay competition. Read the full release below.
Fry Elementary School will honor fifth-grade student Katherine Smirnov in a surprise event taking place at 2 pm on Feb. 20 at the school. Katherine is the first place winner in the National InvestWrite essay competition. It will be during this special event that Katherine will learn for the first time that she has won the national contest.
The InvestWrite essay contest is the pinnacle of the Stock Market Game, a program that teaches economics and the understanding of financial markets to students in fourth through 12th grade. For the InvestWrite essay, students are asked to choose a publicly traded company and analyze the company to determine whether or not it will be a good investment for the future.
Katherine’s essay primarily focused on The Boeing Company which is headquartered here in Chicago. Her entry was given the top prize out of more than 2,000 essays submitted from over 200 elementary schools.
The InvestWrite essay competition is organized by SIFMA, a foundation which is dedicated to financial literacy.
