Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are all rolling upon us. What better way to welcome them and guests than with a custom-designed sign for your front door.
Sara Boo Creek, a tiny yet picturesque store at 107 W. Jefferson St. in downtown Naperville, offers customers endless options and design ideas, all wooden pieces are produced at their local workshop.
“It’s like build-a-bear for adults,” owner Cindy Crawford laughs (she also says she’s no super model). “You can play with ideas, try and re-try, and it’s fool proof.”
When in doubt, one of the staff will gladly help.
Picking a base piece, customers set accent pieces such as ghosts and pumpkins and finish the masterpiece with a name or message. Signs, letters and accent pieces come in all colors and sizes, exclusively designed by Sara Boo Creek.
Crawford started her venture more than 18 years ago.
“I taught history at College of DuPage and was looking to supplement our income, so I went to craft shows with my mom,” says Crawford of her initiation into the business of crafts.
“I started with a lot of vintage items, yard ornaments and garden signs,” Crawford says. “When I introduced the customization about six or seven years ago, that’s what really took off.”
Sara Boo Creek — named after Crawford’s daughter Sara and her son’s nickname, Boo — opened in Naperville in 2007. The first store in Crest Hill opened in 2002.
