Build a doll, a real Middleton baby doll, or adopt one or fix one. At Angelic Creations Doll Store & Hospital in Naperville, an almost antiquated practice has made it into this century to the delight of young and old.
Angel Whitt, a sixth generation Napervillian whose ancestors settled here in the 1840s, is the owner of Angelic Creations Doll Store & Hospital, which calls home a pink Victorian house just south of Route 34 at 816 N. Washington St.
“People come from all over the state and even out of state to ‘adopt’ or build their own baby doll,” Whitt says.
She says she’s had entire families make an event out of adopting a Middleton or Adora baby doll from the Middleton Newborn Nursery in her store.
“The baby dolls are weighted. They look and feel like a real baby,” she says of the dolls, comparing them to the emotional draw of the American Girl dolls. “It’s a dying business, but we cannot give up.”
She adds that she does not gauge success by profits but in happy doll parents.
The process of building a baby doll, which costs $49.99 for an Adora doll or $89.99 for a Middleton doll, takes about 1.5 hours.
“Our staff wears hospital wear as the new parents watch through a window and take lots of pictures,” Whitt says lovingly of the process.
Whitt inherited her love for dolls from her mother and grandmother. Both were big doll collectors. The hook was set, explains Whitt, “when my mother told me to take a class in repairing ceramic dolls.”
“We are usually swamped with ‘surgeries,’” she says of how busy she is. “We fix anything from antique dolls to new Barbies.”
