On Sunday, September 29, the Deccan Mavericks won Naperville Cricket Cup by defeating the defending champions, the Cardinals, in the championship match at Commissioners Park at 3704 111th Street.
“The Deccan Mavericks won this cup in its second year as a team, and that is a great achievement,” said team spokesperson Praveen Nimbagiri.
In the championship game, the Deccan Mavericks batted first and made 187 runs in 25 overs with a loss of 7 wickets. The Cardinals made 140 runs with a loss of 9 wickets.
Cricket is similar to baseball, with 2 teams of 11 players each. The teams take turns batting, with the goal of scoring the most runs. Games traditionally can last all day, but with time and space at a premium, the Naperville Park District limits the length of games to 4 hours.
The Naperville Park District has two cricket pitches, one located at Commissioners Park on the southwest side of the city and one at Nike Sports Complex on the north side.
