A mens 65-year-old division softball team primarily made up of players from the Naperville area and surrounding suburbs, along with three players from the Quad Cities area, won the gold medal for the second year in a row on Sept. 28 in Springfield.
En route to first place the Challengers 65 beat teams from Springfield, Champaign and the Collinsville/Belleville area. The Challengers have participated in the tournament for six consecutive years and won it for the first time in 2012 after finishing second once and third twice.
Contrasted with most teams that play in the tournament, Challengers 65 is not an organized travel team that plays together during the summer. Instead, it is mostly comprised of players who primarily ball in drop-in leagues and come together once a year to participate in the tournament, though some of the players do play on various travel teams.
It is always a challenge to put together a team with players from various suburbs and the Quad Cities area to challenge teams that have been playing together for the summer and in some cases, years. The Challengers were fortunate to bring together not only excellent players, but also ones who understood that while it is always great to win, there is no better feeling that being part of a group that works together for the good of the team win or loss, and that is exactly what the Challengers had.
