Each month, we get to know a member of the Naperville Park District. This month, we shine the spotlight on Superintendent of Golf Grounds Kevin Carlson.
How long have you worked at the Park District?
I actually started working at Springbrook Golf Course in the early 80’s when I was still in high school. I would spend my summers at the course, working or playing golf. I continued working summers at Springbrook through college. After college, I was Superintendent at another golf course for several years before returning to the Park District in 1997, and since then I’ve been Superintendent of Golf Grounds at one or both courses.
What is your favorite part of working at the Park District?
I like the variety the work provides. There is something new every day to keep the work challenging and interesting. Working outdoors is dependent on the weather, which changes pretty quickly around here.
What made you want to work at the Park District?
Great people to work with. I knew several people at the Park District before I was hired, and was eager to work here again. Our employees are hard working, dedicated individuals who enjoy what they do and are good at it.
What new Park District activity are you most excited about?
The goats out at Knoch Knolls! I would like to get them out to the golf courses to take care of the sumac and thistle in our native areas. I also enjoy the Turkey Shoot tournament at both golf courses. It always seems to be the most enjoyable golf event of the year, and people come out no matter the weather. It’s a great way to wrap up the season.
What is your favorite time of year with the Park District?
Tough to answer, since I enjoy all seasons. If I had to pick a time, I would say the fall. Usually fall brings the best weather of the year, and the colors are always great.
What is your favorite thing about Naperville?
It’s a great place in which to live and raise a family. Naperville has great neighborhoods that create a small town feel, but with a vibrant downtown. Plus, you can enjoy the sports, entertainment and cultural events that are nearby in Chicago.
