Editor’s note: The Sun, with the help of the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club, is featuring each month a recent Naperville transplant or a resident who has had a significant life change. Let’s get to know our neighbors!
Loni Sharma hails from Mumbai, India. Her family moved to Connecticut in 1998, but later her husband’s company started an office in the Chicago area. She says she is “old enough to contribute to the community and young enough to have the enthusiasm and energy to do it!” She has two sons, ages 21 and 13.
“I looked online for family friendly towns, and Naperville qualified for all my criteria, so we decided to put down our roots here.
How did you hear about the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club?
“Although over the years I had enjoyed the Naperville Park District programs, I did not know about the NNNC. I am an insurance agent and one of my clients, Susan Knowles, asked me to come to the annual Kickoff Coffee last year. I was thrilled to see all of the opportunities and activities the club offers to those who want to become more involved in the community.”
What are your favorite activities in Naperville?
“I have a long list of favorites! We enjoy walking along the Riverwalk, walking our dog and biking in the different forest preserves, each distinct in their own way. We love the musical and community festivals that Naperville offers to its residents. Ribfest is our favorite. Winter and holiday time are fun in Naperville. Friends and neighbors meet up for a warm cup of cocoa or glog (age appropriate) after sledding or shopping.
“I would also like to mention that, although Naperville is in the heart of the Midwest, the Indian community is strong in numbers and the city joins in to celebrate our holidays, like Diwali — Festival of Light; and Indian Spring Festival — Festival of Colors. This town is like home away from home!”
The Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club holds a welcome coffee once a month from September through June at the Municipal Center. Contact Sue at 630-904-5629 to learn more.
