Probe of Naper Settlement’s Fort Payne fire continues

Naperville Fire Department investigators on Tuesday continued to seek the source and cause of a blaze that did an estimated $150,000 damage to the replica of Fort Payne at Naper Settlement. Deputy Fire Chief Rick Sander said foul play did not figure in the blaze, which erupted about 12:39 a.m. Sunday as numerous participants in the annual Civil War Days were sleeping nearby on Naper Settlement’s grounds. Sander said no one was injured. Twenty-four firefighters brought 10 vehicles and pieces of apparatus to the settlement, at 523 S. Webster St. just south of the city’s downtown. Jim Bergeron will soon be running things in the restaurant he owns in Naperville’s downtown — not Jimmy’s Grill, a different one. Calling the location simply “16 West Jefferson, downtown,” Bergeron encouraged City Council members Tuesday evening to do what they could to expedite the necessary approvals that will put him in charge of operating the current site of BlackFinn American Saloon. The downtown bar has been troubled with fights and code violations strung over the past several years, including a late-night brawl earlier this month that brought misdemeanor charges for seven area men. Members of Naperville police honored for service

The citizens of Naperville took time recently to honor members of the city’s Police Department as Citizens Appreciate Public Safety hosted an awards dinner to recognize public safety employees for service beyond their usual duties. Based on nominations from Naperville residents, the CAPS committee selected five award winners for this year’s annual event. The evening was highlighted by the George Pradel Award, given to one of the five winners, which represents the highest award for employees involved in service to the community.
