What a difference a day makes.

Less than 24 hours after laying an egg in a loss to Plainfield North in Southwest Prairie Conference play, Oswego East responded Saturday with a 66-48 win over 14-7 Waubonsie Valley.

The Wolves put the defensive clamps on Warriors standout Jared Brownridge, holding him to just eight points in the second game of the Second annual Ernie Kivisto Shootout at East Aurora High School.

“You lose to a 3-15 team by (16), and that’s the second time they’ve beaten us, and then come back like that,” said pleased Oswego East coach Jason Buckley, whose team is 9-9.

“It just shows that on any given night … we did many things well.”

It featured a career-high 32 points and eight rebounds from 6-foot-4 senior Kalmon Stokes, but was kickstarted by the defensive work of 6-2 senior guard E.J. Watkins, an unsung player much of this season.

“Awesome,” Buckley said of his team’s work in holding the standout Brownridge well below his 21.6 scoring average.

“E.J. was great and the little Nick Craft was used, he was good too. Frustrating him was key and we showed help all day.

“I was really impressed with our effort and execution. We’ve had the effort all season, not always the execution.”

Oswego East’s C.J. Vaughan, who was battling a stomach ailment, too, was limited to must six points by the Warriors but Nick Marema added 19.

Oswego East led 21-18 at the break but outscored the Warriors 43-30 in the second half.

Brandon Malby had 14 points and Bryan Jefferson 10 for Waubonsie Valley.

“I really thought they outplayed us in every facet of the game, offensively, defensively, fastbreaking, going after loose balls, everything,” said Waubonsie Valley coach Steve Weemer.

“That’s what I told the kids, then told ’em I’d see them Monday at practice and walked out of the locker room. We weren’t very good tonight. I better not say anymore.”
