Seven Western DuPage Special Recreation Association athletes earned medals at the 2012 Illinois Special Olympics Winter Games this month. Four WDSRA snowshoers and three figure skaters competed at the games.
WDSRA snowshoers claimed a third-place finish in the 4-by-100 relay. Competitors included: Grant Camper of Carol Stream, Neal Mrozak of Wheaton, Jordan Pfauth of Carol Stream, and Tyler Stoner of Downers Grove.
In individual races, Pfauth received a gold medal for his first-place finish in the 50-meter race. Neal Mrozak finished fourth in the 200-meter race.
WDSRA also brought home gold, silver and bronze medals for figure skating. Amy Scheuchenzuber of Hanover Park placed first, Amaanat Jolly (Singh) of Wheaton placed second, and Sarah Bak of Glen Ellyn placed third in singles competition.
WDSRA program supervisor Jackie Salemi said coaches and staff are proud of the athletes.
“They trained hard and competed well,” Salemi said. “It is an exciting competition, and we are always pleased to have the opportunity to send our participants.”
