Neuqua Valley wide receiver and defensive back Mikey Dudek was named the fastest receiver at the University of Illinois one-day camp on June 23. About 200 campers were in attendance in Champaign and the 5-11, 175-pound 16-year-old came out on top with a 4.40 second 40-yard-dash and 3.9 second professional shuttle run.
According to Dudek, both Illini head coach Tim Beckman and offensive line coach Luke Butkus were impressed with his performance.
“I went to this camp excited to compete and learn more about U of I and the new coaching staff,” Dudek said in a news release. “We ran our forties and I qualified for a run-off which consisted of the fastest five players at the camp. I won that and then they selected me to go against their top defensive back. I out ran him, caught my pass and kept on going.
“Afterwards, Coach Beckman came up to me and said I did a great job and said he was going to keep track of me. Coach Butkus also approached me and said he was impressed with my speed and ability. We had a campus tour and I was really impressed with the university, its academics and the new Illini coaches.”
In addition to Illinois, Dudek has gained the attention of coaches at Eastern Illinois, Arizona, Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Colorado, Indiana, Tulsa, Purdue, Butler and Dayton.
“I am dedicated to playing football at the next level and work every day to achieve my goal,” Dudek said. “It was great to compete with kids from all over the country as well as guys two year older than me and still come out on top.”
Next for Dudek is the Prodigy Camp hosted by prep football expert Tom Lemming and Junior Rank Sports in Naples, Fla., on July 26-28.
