BOYS WATER POLO

Neuqua Valley 15, Waubonsie Valley 13 — Leading the offense for Wildcats were Will Russell with six goals, Alex Thoele with four goals and Simon Shatinsky with three. Michael McWhirter had five goals for Waubonsie, and Braden Krug had four.

BADMINTON

Neuqua Valley 15, Elgin 0 — Cecilia Li and Wendy Yang won the number one and two singles matches for the Wildcats and then paired up to win at number one doubles.

WRESTLING

First girls championships — Ella Kooi, 10, of Naperville, took first place in her age bracket at the first Illinois Girls State Wrestling Championships in Yorkville on March 10.  Ella defeated three female opponents by scores of 7-0 and pinned the next two.  A total of 99 female wrestlers competed, ranging from kindergarten through high school, a state record. The previous record was 48 girls (K-8) at the IKWF Jon Davis Kids’ Open held in Springfield in January.

Ella Kooi will compete at the Girls Folkstyle National Championships and University National Championship in Oklahoma City March 29-30.   

YOUTH SPORTS

Football and track camp — April 7 is the date for a special youth camp at North Central College. Registration has opened for the J.J.Y.A. Football and Track All-Star Youth Pro Camp.

J. Hunt and J. Singleton Youth All-star Camp (J.J.Y.A. Pro Camp, LLC) is a youth camp specifically designed to assist boys and girls, 5-15 years of age, in comprehensive football and track skills. Athletes will receive a thorough analysis of positions, specific skill training, and performance sessions led by professional head coach Jeff Hunt and his staff, ranging from high school, collegiate and AFL coaches.

Some of the proceeds from the camp will be donated to foundations fighting gun violence affecting youths such as Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting Foundation (United Way of Western Connecticut) in Newtown, Conn., and the Purpose Over Pain Foundation in Chicago.

Celebrity guest appearances at the camp are planned by former Illini and Pittsburgh Steeler Carey Davis, former Bear Desmond Clark, former Buc Jameel Cook and Arena Football League kicker Chris Gould.
