Wrestling: Neuqua Valley’s Geers commits to Purdue

Updated: April 21, 2013 6:44AM

Taking an official visit to Purdue’s campus in West Lafayette, Ind., this past weekend, Neuqua Valley senior Andrew Geers came away with a “wow factor.”

Not wasting any time, Geers made his pledge to Purdue official on Monday night via Twitter with a simple message: “Officially committed to Purdue University!!”

Coming back with a favorable impression of both the coaching staff and the facilities, he felt the time was right to commit to the Boilermakers.

“Felt very comfortable at Purdue. I could see myself excelling at Purdue,” said Geers, who finished second to Hinsdale Central’s Brian Allen last month in the final of Class 3A’s 285-pound weight class.

Receiving a partial scholarship from Purdue, he expects to redshirt as a freshman as three of the five wrestlers Purdue saw qualify for the NCAA championships this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, will return next year.

Purdue finished 17-6 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten.

Geers, who will major in aviation, chose the Boilermakers over offers from American University, Ohio University, Central Michigan and Nebraska and his visit to Purdue this past weekend was his only visit to any of those five schools.

“Great feeling to finally be committed somewhere and know where I’m going next year,” he said.
