Roundup: NCC women’s golf headed to nationals

NCC women’s golf earns trip to nationals

For the first time in its 13-year history, the North Central College women’s golf team has been selected to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Cardinals are one of 19 teams set to play in this year’s event, according to the NCAA’s official announcement released Monday.

North Central was represented at the 2008 National Championships by Alyssa Gaudio, who qualified as an individual. Gaudio returns to the tournament this season, this time accompanied by the entire team.

The Cardinals were ranked 15th in the most recent poll released by the National Golf Coaches Association, and last competed April 17 at the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Invitational, when they finished first in a field of 20 that included eight ranked teams.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin will also be represented by Illinois Wesleyan University, which won the CCIW Championship last fall, and an individual qualifier, Wheaton College’s Casi Blanton.

Methodist University (N.C.) has won the past 13 Division III National Championships and was ranked No. 1 in the most recent coaches’ poll.

This year’s tournament, a 72-hole event, will be contested May 10-13 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
