Neuqua Valley graduate Patrick Doody, a midfielder/defender for the Indiana University men’s soccer team, knew this was a big deal — a game between the defending national champion Hoosiers and Southern Methodist.
What Doody probably did not know was that he would score the game-winning goal in Indiana’s 2-1 win.
“(SMU) is a good team,” Doody said. “Beating them was extremely important because of the rankings. I am sure that winning that game will help us in the RPI (Ratings Percentage Index). I (scored) on a free kick through the defensive players and it (got) past the goalkeeper.”
He scored at the 71:51 mark, giving Indiana what amounted to the final score.
More recently, Doody assisted the Hoosiers’ last goal as they defeated California State-Bakersfield 4-1. He scored at the 74:52 mark of that game. So far Doody has one goal and one assist. Indiana is 2-3-1 overall.
Vanessa DiBernardo (Waubonsie Valley), an Illinois senior midfielder, scored a goal and doled out an assist as the Illini downed Indiana State. DiBernardo scored at the 58:09 mark for a 2-1 lead. Illinois freshman Hope D’Addario (Neuqua Valley) subbed into the game and played 61 minutes. In a 4-0 win over Florida International, DiBernardo had two assists. D’Addario started and played 54 minutes at midfielder. Illinois sophomore Megan Green (Waubonsie Valley) subbed in and played 18 minutes. Illinois is 5-2-1.
Caitlin Cremin (Naperville North) helped Colgate post a 2-1 mark at the Blackbird Invitational. Colgate defeated Fairfield and Cornell. Their only loss was to LIU-Brooklyn in five sets. Cremin finished the three matches with 59 digs and 12 assists. She had 29 digs and four assists in her best match of the tournament. Colgate is 6-3.
Eastern Illinois defeated Illinois State 57-24 in a battle of NCAA Division I-Football Championship Series teams. The Panthers entered as the No. 9-ranked team in the country, while the Redbirds were ranked 16th. For EIU, Alex Helms (Naperville North) had three tackles. Two of the senior linebacker’s tackles were solos. Rickey Simpson (Waubonsie Valley), an ISU senior, had five tackles (four solos). The defensive lineman had one quarterback sack for nine yards of loss. EIU improved to 3-0. Illinois State is 0-2.
Notre Dame senior McKinzie Schulz (Benet) finished fourth at the Crusader Invitational, which was hosted by Valparaiso. Schulz finished the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 17.9 seconds. She was the fourth Irish runner to finish. Notre Dame grabbed the top six spots and finished with a perfect score of 15 points.
The DePaul men’s soccer team is 1-4. Pat Flynn (Naperville Central), Art Garza (Naperville Central) and Brandon Loncar (Neuqua Valley) have each logged time for DePaul. Flynn, a freshman, has two goals. Garza, a senior defensive player, and Loncar, a junior midfielder, each have one goal this year.
Courtney Abrahamovich (Naperville Central) has 18 digs and eight service aces through the first eight matches for Illinois (4-4).
Jack Patrick (Naperville Central) has played in four games on defense with one start for Eastern Illinois, which has started out 0-4. Colin Rook (Naperville Central) has appeared in three games and made one start. Chris Boswell (Naperville North) has played in two games for the Panthers.
