FOOTBALL: Naperville Central won its DuPage Valley Conference game Friday night 35-20 on the strength of three West Aurora turnovers, including a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The Redhawks (3-1, 2-0) held the ball for just over 33 minutes, allowing running back Matt Randolph to chew up 190 yards on 36 carries.

Benet tops Hinsdale South to win tournament

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Benet picked up a 25-16, 25-22 win over Hinsdale South to capture the championship at the prestigious 24-team Wheaton Classic. The Redwings now hold a 15-1 record on the season and have now won this tournament three of the four years they have played in it. Fellow East Suburban Catholic team Marist won the title last year.

FOOTBALL: Playing on its new on-campus home field for the first time, South Elgin gave a jam-packed home crowd plenty to cheer about by posting a 33-0 shutout against Metea Valley. A key turning point in the Upstate Eight Valley contest came in the first quarter when Mustangs quarterback Jarrett House injured his right knee on the final play of his team’s first possession.

FOOTBALL: In search of its first win in front of a homecoming crowd at Benedictine University, Benet went up two touchdowns in the first half, only to see Marist rally for a 17-14 victory. Cillian Hannon’s 21-yard field goal on the final play of the game won it for the Redhawks.

FOOTBALL: Naperville North hands Wheaton Warrenville South its first DuPage Valley Conference since 2008, beating the Tigers 17-14 Friday night. Huskies quarterback Tyler Gehr and running back Dan Puknaitis came up with two big scoring plays and combined to rush for 232 yards in the game.

GIRLS SWIMMING NOTEBOOK: Waubonsie sophomore Maddie Hunt turned in a solid performance at the Neuqua Valley Invitational, winning the 50 freestyle and finished third in the 100 backstroke. The Warriors’ medley relay team also represents a great deal of coach Katie Peterson’s optimism for the future, because Hunt’s teammates were sophomores Molly Devine and Melina Moussetis and freshman Alexa Steffl.
