There’s a new orchestra in town, tuning up at the Rialto as we speak.

“With the arrival of David Danzmayr as our music director a year or so ago, we decided to go to new markets,” said Andrew Bradford, the executive director of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, based in Park Forest.

The result is a series of concerts that the orchestra will perform at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet. The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will present the first of its shows with “The Magical Music of Disney” on Dec. 20.

Now in its 36th season, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra’s repertoire ranges from Baroque and classical pieces, to world premiere presentations and modern favorites.

“We perform six subscription concerts each year that are more traditional,” Bradford said, “and one pops concert - that’s the Disney show this year. We do educational shows and two chamber music series, like a quartet or a jazz ensemble. With a full orchestra, we do about 12 shows a year.”

For the “The Magical Music of Disney” show, the 60-piece orchestra will perform music from 10 Disney movies including “Tarzan,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Hercules,” “Mary Poppins,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Rescuers Down Under,” “Aladdin,” “Mulan,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “The Lion King.”

“This is a multi-media production with still images and video clips of the Disney movies,” Bradford said. “The orchestra will play the scores from the films while the images are shown on the screens. It is a great way to introduce ourselves to new audiences.”

“David, until he took this job in June of 2012, was living and conducting in Europe,” said Bradford about Music Director David Danzmayr. “While he was there, he did three concerts of this Disney show. It was tremendously successful there. David wants to champion American music. You can’t get any more American than Walt Disney.”

Bradford hopes that the concerts will enrich the lives of people in the community.

“You can go to hear a rock band or a jazz performance, but there is nothing like the sound of 60 musicians playing together,” he said. “And with the acoustics in a place like the Rialto being so fantastic, it will be a special experience.”
