Churches host community events

Church to launch Bible Reading Campaign

Word of Life Lutheran Church, 879 Tudor Drive, Naperville, will launch its Story Church Campaign on Sunday, Jan. 5. The 31 sessions will feature carefully-selected scriptures sequenced in chronological order.

“The Bible is central to our faith,” said Pastor Gary Peterson of Word of Life, “but many people are intimidated by its scope and size. The Story gives us a way to journey from Genesis to Revelation together in 31 sessions so everyone understands God’s story and how their story intersects with it.”

The program will be featured at both services either at 8:30 or 10:30 a.m. To learn more, visit www.wordoflife.net, or call the church at 630-355-9655.

‘Winter Sabbath’ program for women Jan. 10

“Winter Sabbath,” a micro-retreat for women will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the Lighthouse room in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. Reservations for this interactive micro-retreat, at $10 each payable at the door, are encouraged by Wednesday, Jan. 8. Space is limited to 75 people.

Colleen Lowery will facilitate the program that includes prayer, meditations and group discussion as participants meet Jesus by the Sea of Galilee and “cast our nets in new places” to discover the wisdom within.

Lowery, a presenter/instructor for Mayslake Ministries, Lombard, and the Diocese of Joliet Cardinal Newman Institute for Lay Formation, is an inspirational speaker and retreat facilitator for groups of all ages from youth through adults. She earned a master’s degree and has extensive experience in the Joliet Diocese as a spiritual and educational leader.

The evening’s program will begin with wine and light refreshments.

“Winter Sabbath” is being sponsored by the Sophia’s Circle of St. Thomas the Apostle. This ministry offers three micro-retreats yearly for women to explore topics related to spiritual re-connections of faith in a three-hour evening format.
